The Atlantic has a photo essay from the the year 1966, the year I was born. BUT I WON’T BE 50 UNTIL NOVEMBER! Pretty crazy year, though. I’m sure there were a lot of people who were convinced that we’d never survive. Sounds hauntingly like today....

People were so much happier before Nixon’s war on drugs. Of course, the happiness was drug-induced, but still.

And Vietnam, man. What a mess. I’m glad that we’ve more or less gotten away from our position as AMERICA: WORLD POLICE - DEMOCRACY AND CAPITALISM OR DEATH. Sorry, got a little political there. But I think most people agree that we should stop trying to force every nation to be like ours.

We’ve stopped trying to be the Grand Army of Capitalism and Democracy.

At least kinda. We haven’t sent our entire army to Syria yet, so that’s a start.

Pic number 18 has an HH43 Huskie performing a medivac. Not a common helicopter to see. It uses the fairly uncommon intermeshing rotor design.

Have we really come that far? I fear we are regressing.

During the war, the two-pilot HH-43 Huskie flew more rescue missions than all other aircraft combined, because of its unique hovering capability. (Wiki)

It’s definitely a mostly-forgotten aircraft.

Another cool fact from that wiki is that the designer was seized via opperation paper clip, designed the Kolibri, one of the first helicopters used in combat. It was an artillery spotter.
